RICHMOND, Va. – A member of Richmond City Council is vying to be the River City’s next mayor.

Kim Gray, who represents the 2nd district, made the official announcement Sunday at Bar Solita in Downtown Richmond.

Gray's candidacy sets up a battle against incumbent Mayor Levar Stoney in November.

Gray, a lifelong Richmonder, said she will focus on the city’s most pressing needs, while encouraging more citizen engagement.

"When the needs of the people go unmet, there must be reasons,” Gray told supporters. “They have been ignored, unheeded or considered by those in leadership to be subordinate."

Gray has served on city council since 2017 and previously served on the Richmond City School Board from 2009 to 2016.

The general election is Nov. 3.
